What inspired you to publish your book?
Initially, this book was birthed out of personal pain from ‘failed’ relationships which I now relate to as experiential relationships. It started out as a healing tool for me after my relationship ended. I was going to talk about how women put on a front and mask their emotions when, in truth, we all do. I could not release this book until I became liberated in some way. For a year and a half, I grieved, not because of the loss of my relationship but because I no longer recognized myself. I indulged myself in working to alleviate the acknowledgement of pain. I brainwashed myself to avoid the existence of the deep-rooted discomfort. When I recognized what it was doing for me in the process, I realized publishing my book would help someone else too.
What can readers take away from your book?
My readers will see that this book is both revolutionary and a revelation for their spirit. They can take away that they have room to collaborate on their liberation journey. Think of the book as a tool. Use the open spaces on certain pages and create a free diary for yourself.
What was your writing process like?
My writing style was sporadic. I tried to structure it but that didn’t work well for me—it seemed forced. So, whenever I felt something, I would jot it down in my notes or a voice memo in real-time. It alleviated tension and writers' block. My process also included doubt. I kept second-guessing what should be left in and what should be taken out.
Are you planning to write other books?
Absolutely! I’ve literally had 4 books in progress at once. The next one is specifically geared to students. It is called Things I Wish My Guidance Counselor Told Me.
What's a cool or interesting fact about yourself?
I’m really a “hype beast”. I root for people operating at their best even when they feel low. I cheer people up, on, and through! This was my thing way before I became a college mascot.
What is some advice you would give aspiring or first-time authors?
Just write! Write what you are feeling. Remember that you will go through the editing process later! Free your mind and leave it on the page. Write on!
